Traditionally known as "the government district", the Second Ward of Uptown Charlotte is home to city and county office buildings, county courthouse, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools administration, the Law Enforcement Center and the Charlotte branch of the Federal Reserve Bank. The Second Ward is bordered by Trade Street running East and West, Tryon Street running North and South, and 277 as a southernmost border. More recently, Second Ward has been renewed through the redevelopment projects that have brought households, shopping, and entertainment to the Uptown.
The biggest addition to the 2nd Ward is the new entertainment and shopping center called the Epicentre. This new development is home to restaurants, bars, retail shops, a movie theatre, hotel, and bowling alley. The Epicenter shows great promise to be a hub of activity for years to come. The movie theatre at the Epicentre provides a unique movie-going experience with reclining chairs and love-seats that are available for reservation so you are sure to have the seat you want. A botique hotel is also open called A Loft. This hotel is targeted for people who enjoy loft syle homes and want the modern feel when they are away from home. There are many other restaurants and shops in this complex that is the center of the activity The tenants of the Epicentre are provided in the table to the right: One development that has brought a lot of attention to the 2nd ward is the new Nascar Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is anticipated to open in late 2009 and is expected to bring millions of tourist to the city. This anticipated growth of tourism has prompted development of hotels, shopping, and restaurants in the area surrounding this site. The Nascar Hall of Fame block also includes a new office tower that is nearing completion. 2nd Ward Map
