3rd Ward
Gateway VillageThird Ward today is the most diverse of the city's wards. It includes a sports and entertainment area, a university, a residential neighborhood, and a 1.5 million square foot mixed use complex called Gateway Village. This neighborhood offers something for everyone and is growing rapidly. As the Third Ward develops closer to the center of the Uptown, there is an increased excitement in once dormant parking lots that onced seperated Gateway Village from the rest of the Uptown. With a new baseball park planned, city park, and numerous towers under construction, the future of this area is bright.

Gateway Village was the first major redevelopment that the Third Ward experienced back in the late 1990s. This innovative complex consisted of technology-oriented office space, over 500 new residential units, a public park, shops and restaurants. Gateway Village is attracting attention nationwide for creative positioning of a mixed-use development in an urban setting.

JWUThe recent addition of Johnson and Wales to the Third Ward has given the area a buzz with the bustling foot traffic of students and staff that are constantly increasing amongst the new dormitories and street level classrooms. Johnson and Wales is a private career oriented university that specializes in hospitality, culinary arts, and business.Johnson and Wales has produced such notable chefs as Emeril Lagasse and Tyler Florence. The Charlotte campus of JWU opened in 2004 and currently enrolls over 2,500 students in the Uptown. JWUs campus is located in the Gateway Village area of Third Ward with street level cooking class rooms open to pedestrian spectators. As a growing university, JWU is a cornerstore to the commerce and street life that exists in the Gateway Village area.

The Bank of America Stadium is the home of the Carolina Pathers. The Carolina Panthers is Charlotte's NFL team. The first game played in the stadium was on September 14, 1996. The stadium has a capacity of 73,298 and is used primarily for football. Other events have been held at the stadium like a Rolling Stones concert and a Billy Graham crusade. The college football bowl called the Meineke Car Care Bowl is held at the Bank of America Stadium each year and is a note-worthy event each year in Charlotte. Bank of America Stadium

The newest addition to the skyline is the new Wells Fargo tower and cultural complex surrounding. The tower stands as one of the tallest in the city and is notable for its unique architecture. This building is designed to be LEED certified in an effort to be more environmentally responsible. In addition to the tower, the site will be home to the new Mint Museum of Art, Bechler Museum of Modern Art, African-American Cultural Complex, and a performance theatre. This new development will certainly be a popular destinaiton for both residents and tourist.

The Third Ward has several parks that provide relief and enjoyment to Uptown residents and visitors. The latest addition to the parks is a new 5-acre urban park that will be located within a block of Tryon Street Uptown. This new park will be surrounded by new high-rises and will be the center of recreation and rejuvenation for many uptown residents. Many residents of Third Ward currently enjoy all the Frazier Park has to offer. Frazier Park borders I-77 and is the western most boundry of the neighborhood. In addition to the typical park components, Frazier Park has the Uptown's only dog park--or Bark Park. Any given weekend, there may be as many as a hundred dogs running and playing with each other while the owners socialize. This park has been a huge sucess in turning otherwise neglected space into a community gathering point and recreation space for our four-legged friends.
