Myers Park
Myers Park Charlotte NCMyers Park is a neighborhood located to the East of the Uptown and is considered by many to be one of the finest planned development neighborhoods in the country. With beginnings dating to the early 1900s, the neighborhood was designed by a mentee of Fredric Olmstead by the name of John Nolen. Nolen laid out a detailed plan for the neighborhood which resulted in the largest tree transplant project known. Each tree found in Myers Park was placed strategically and intentionally. The trees, which survive today, provide the setting for some of the nicest homes in Charlotte. Originally designed as a Streetcar neighborhood, this neighborhood now enjoys large medians where the tracks once laid.

One of the landmark icons on Myers Park is the old Streetcar Waiting Station located on the corner of Queens, 3rd,and Providence Rd. This stone portico was designed to match the stone archway that was the entrance to the neighborhood which is no longer standing. This waiting station is a frequent meeting point for runners and cyclist. Exercisers refer to this station as the starting point for a 3 mile look through Myers Park that has been donned “The Booty Loop”. Each year “The Booty Loop” hosts a large charity fundraiser called “24 Hours of Booty”. This even closes down the streets to provide an opportunity for cyclist to ride around the loop for 24 hours. Each year the event draws in thousands and has raised millions of dollars since its inception. The loop consist of Queens Rd, Queens Rd, and Queens Rd. There are various theories as to the origins of the neighborhood’s nickname, but most people out at the Booty Loop will be willing to share their opinion as to where the name came from.

House in Myers ParkThe streets of Myers Park can be confusing to newcomers as this neighborhood has several intersections with streets of the same name. This is the result of an original plan for a neighborhood that did not consist of thoroughfares such as we have today. The most common street in Myers Park is Queens Rd. Queens University can be found on Queens Rd in the heart of Myers Park although the street bore the name first. Queens University is a private college with approximately 1,600 students. Originally a women’s only college, the now co-ed Queens University is a well respected school with a strong Business emphasis. The campus of Queens is laid out beautifully with classic architecture and mature trees covering the grounds.

Another landmark in the neighborhood is the Duke Mansion. Originally constructed in 1915, the home was tripled in size in 1919 when it was purchased by James Buchanan Duke. Mr Duke, a tobacco and utility tycoon, had two wings extended off the main house as well as numerous fountains and gardens. The white-columned Colonial estate is now operated as a Bed and Breakfast as well as a conference center. This home is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is the centerpiece of the neighborhood overlooking Edgehill Park.

Although the neighborhood is one of the most expensive in the city, there are a number of more affordable houses and condos for those who are interested in a great location close to the city with a neighborhood feel. The newest destinations offering affordable housing is the development by Crosland called “Tranquil Court”. Tranquil offers 1, 2, and 3 bedroom condos priced from $190k as well as secured parking, a private courtyard and residential focused commercial space on the ground level. Homes should be ready for occupancy in late 2009/early 2010.

Freedom Park in Myers ParkMyers Park Country Club boast the most exclusive in-town private club featuring tennis, swimming, dining and golf course. The golf course was closed for the majority of 2008 for renovations and is scheduled to re-open in 2009. This golf course sits on the most expensive land in the city and is easily the city’s most valuable golf course in land value alone.

From its earliest days, Myers Park attracted some of the most affluent residents of Charlotte. Arguably, the neighborhood has been home to more executives and CEOs than any other neighborhood in the city. With an average home price of $800k, Myers Park is a top address for professionals in the city. No longer considered a suburb of the city—this neighborhood is a top-tier destination for anyone looking to live in the Uptown.
