NoDa--The Arts District
The Arts District HousesNoDa, aka The Arts District, is a historic neighborhood which found its beginning in the 1880s is located North of the Uptown. NoDa, short for North Davidson, is a popular community for artists and people with eclectic taste and an appreciation for history. Originally called North Charlotte, this community developed as a mill town centered around the employment offered in the cotton and textile mills which became abundant in the area.

The first mill in the area was constructed by Edward Dilworth Latta in 1891 and was subsequently named Highland Park Mill. The community began developing around the mill which also provided affordable housing to the workers. While Charlotte’s population grew by 82% between 1900 and 1910, the capacity and number of jobs in the mills provided the employment necessary for such growth during that time. The area eventually saw over a half-dozen mills which operated until the mid 1970s. The 1970s and 1980s were unkind to the community and the neighborhood was largely overlooked until the mid 1990s when the neighborhood began to make a comeback as an area for artists and urban pioneers. Today, the neighborhood is a model of urban renewal and adaptive reuse with most of the mills still standing today. These buildings and others have been adapted into various uses as a central part of the neighborhood as either residential or commercial buildings serving the community.

Cabo Fish Taco in NoDaA key building in the culture of the neighborhood today is the Hand Pharmacy Building which was constructed in 1908. This building, located on the corner of 35th and Davidson St, was home to North Charlotte’s first pharmacy as well as a community meeting room which eventually hosted union workers’ meetings. The brick building stands today as an icon of the neighborhood and is currently home to the neighborhood’s most popular restaurant, Cabo Fish Taco. Cabo Fish Taco is a vibrant restaurant which serves tacos, burritos, and various specials all of which are centered on seafood.

Another icon of the neighborhood is Fire Station #7 which opened in 1936. This station was constructed to be home to a single fire engine as include a double jail cell. The exterior of the building is considered to be Colonial Revival style with a parapet roof and pediment-like decoration and pilasters—making the building a worthwhile sight to check out. Serving the community to this day, Fire Station #7 is home for some of the city’s finest public servants.

Firehouse in NoDaThe Neighborhood Theatre is another landmark in the community that still serves as hosting venue for numerous events. Originally built as a movie theatre in the 1950s, the theatre was later used as a XXX movie house. Eventually the battle was won against the distasteful elements surrounding such an operation and the building now operates as a popular concert venue attracting local and national musicians and bands.

Several galleries engage in bi-weekly NoDa Gallery Crawls throughout the year, adding to the vibrancy of the neighborhood. Other great amenities in the area include the Smelly Cat Coffeehouse, Evening Muse, Dolce Vita Wine Bar, Salvador Deli and the unique Dog Bar where canines and their owners alike can enjoy yappy hour!Smelly Cat in NoDa
